High School Travel Hockey

The AYHA participates in the Ohio Scholastic Hockey League, which is made up of teams from Central Ohio and is part of the Mid American District and is a USA Hockey sanctioned combined high school division. Its member teams are established by districts to allow players who attend high schools that do not have varsity hockey programs to play at a competitive high school level. The AYHA OSHL team is required to participate in both home and away games with the OSHL as well as potential out-of-league games. Registration on the AYHA OSHL team requires a commitment to attend all practices and play out-of-town away games.

AGES

The high school team is for students in the 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades who live within the AYHA OSHL district. Those 9th grade players who by age are still eligible to play on the 14U BTHL team may have the option to play on the high school team, subject to the needs of the high school team, the skills of the player, recommendation by the Director of Hockey, and approval of the Board of Directors.

Where

Practices and home games are held at Ohio University's Bird Ice Arena in Athens, Ohio. Away games are primarily in the Columbus area, with additional venues including rinks in Columbus, Cincinnati, Dayton, Cleveland, and Charleston, West Virginia.

Practices

The high school team typically practices twice a week. Practices are usually late in the evening to allow the younger AYHA age division players to get home earlier.

Games

During a typical season, the high school team may play between 16 and 20 league games, plus an end-of-season tournament. The high school team may schedule non-league home and away games throughout the season as well as participate in non-league tournaments to increase their competitive level. OSHL games are typically on Friday evenings, and due to the higher competitive and athletic nature of the OSHL, it is uncommon to have two games on the same day.

Jerseys

All players on each travel team must purchase a home and away jersey through the AYHA, and the AYHA generally takes orders before the beginning of the season. Players may select their own number, as long as no other player within a four-year span of age, older or younger, already has that number. Numbers may be kept by each player from 10U all the way through High School.

ICE TIME

Unlike the younger AYHA age division teams that implement the USA Hockey recommended "equal ice time" philosophy to foster player development, ice time on the high school team is earned by each player based on skill, effort at practices and games, attitude, and commitment to the team in order to create the most competitive play possible as determined by the coaching staff.

Non-OSHL tournament entry fees are also the responsibility of the player's family. Families are responsible for all travel costs for all games and events throughout the season, including meals and hotel arrangements.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have a child who is 15 years old but is completely new to hockey. Can my child be on or practice with the 14U team?

No. USA Hockey and the MidAm District have strict rules that generally prohibit playing down to a lower age division, and the AYHA has policies that reflect these rules.
